"The construction industry is recognizing the stigma it has historically attached to worker mental health and the catastrophic negative impact this has had. This training gives employers the tools they need to address these issues. Practical tools, relatable scenarios, and real conversations will resonate with construction leaders and the overall workforce."

Justin Molocznik, MS CSP CHST

Director, Safety & Health, JTM Construction

The construction industry is facing a mental health crisis

The CPWR Center for Construction Research and Training reports that nearly half of all construction workers experience depression and that work-related factors are strongly associated with poor mental health in construction. Work-related factors contributing to poor mental health include employment instability and insecurity, job demands, lack of support, long work hours, hazardous work, poor psychosocial and safety climate, and bullying and harassmentⁱ. Mental Health Support for Construction Crews responds to these well-documented issues.

This training was developed with support from Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The training is a key component of the Respectful Workplace Initiative, a partnership of the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, BOLI, and ODOT, designed to improve construction jobsite culture.

Our evidence-based, online training helps construction leaders:

  • Recognize the warning signs of mental health distress;

  • Learn appropriate ways to respond to workplace mental health concerns;

  • Learn practical strategies to reduce employee stress; and

  • Learn preventative strategies to support employees’ mental health.

This training was originally developed in partnership with the U.S. military by occupational health experts at OHSU.

The initial research on which the training is based found that managers received the training reported:

  • Reduced anger and loneliness;

  • Reduced risk factors for poor mental health;

  • Improved feelings of support from manager; and

  • Increased feelings of team cohesion.
